The 1788-89 Senate Elections

Throughout late 1788 and 1789, twelve of the thirteen original US states' legislatures chose two senators each to represent them in the Senate. As there was no popular vote, no popular vote totals are given. State results are as follows:

• Connecticut
• Delaware
• Georgia
• Maryland
• Massachusetts
• New Hampshire
• New Jersey
• New York
• North Carolina
• Pennsylvania
• Rhode Island
• South Carolina
• Virginia

18 federalists and 8 antifederalists were elected.
